Nairobi, Kenya – May 19, 2009 – Bamburi Cement Group, the leading cement company in East Africa, has today announced a KES 1.8 Million financial support for two key community projects run by Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM).

The beneficiaries are the MRM reconstruction project for schools destroyed during the 2008 post-election violence, which will receive cement worth KES 1.4 Million and a KES 400,000 budget donation to the Mabati Technical Training Institute (MTTI), a vocational training centre setup by MRM to assist the poor and needy youths around Mariakani Township.

Speaking during the cheque handing over ceremony, Bamburi Cement Group Managing Director Hussein Mansi welcomed the efforts by MRM to alleviate the adverse effects of post election destruction of property in learning institutions across the country.

Said, Hussein Mansi, “While actual impact of destruction in schools across the country may never be determined, the reality on the ground is that more than 100,000 of children are suffering for reasons they may never understand. It only takes the resolve of a mindful organisation such as MRM begin the road to recovery. Bamburi Cement is in total support of this and proud to be associated with the particular cause”

According to Ministry of Education at least 100 schools – six of them extensively – has their facilities damaged during the post election violence. This in turn resulted in the disruption of learning activities for approximately about 100,000 schoolchildren and nearly 1000 teachers.

“We know MRM is only a small drop in a cause that wants far greater private sector involvement” said, Dr. Manu Chandaria, Chairman of SAFAL Group as he extended the his groups gratitude towards the financial support by Bamburi Cement, “The donation by Bamburi Cement will no doubt bridge a wide gap in our schools reconstruction programme”

Mutate and Sasumua Primary schools, both in Molo, are the first beneficiaries of the MRM-driven reconstruction programme. The two schools will receive 2000 bags of cement from Bamburi Cement Limited
