Bamburi Cement commits social impact investments to Mombasa County
Bamburi Cement Plc and County Government of Mombasa have pledged to collaborate on initiatives that benefit the community within the Mombasa County.
Bamburi Cement plans to boost its annual investments in health, education, environmental initiatives, economic empowerment, and infrastructure across various sub-counties in Mombasa. It will also tailor its social impact investments to align with the county’s most urgent socio-economic needs.
The commitment was made in a courtesy meeting where iftar food donations were presented to the Governor of Mombasa County, H.E. Abdulswammad Sheriff Nassir. In total, Bamburi Cement has supported 4,000 vulnerable Muslim families in over 20 locations across different sub-counties. These donations follow a landmark deal completed recently, in which the Pan African business conglomerate Amsons Group acquired a 100% stake in Bamburi Cement for Ksh 23.2 billion last year.
“Mombasa County is Bamburi Cement’s true home. Our recommitment to the County is inspired by a need to make tangible difference to a region and a people that have unwaveringly supported the company in the 70-year journey and forge the future together,” said Tawaqal Rajab Sumba, Amsons Group representative. “The County Government of Mombasa share our commitment to bringing private sector and public sectors together to support Country and the County’s transformative social-economic agenda”
H.E Abdulswammad said: “We are glad to work with willing private sector companies such as Bamburi Cement in Mombasa to contribute to the necessary and transformative social-economic upliftment and create a conducive regulatory and trading environment for thriving.”
Bamburi Cement Plc’s Commercial Director Martin Kariuki, said that beyond social impact, the company’s upcoming investment plans in Mombasa County are designed to enhance Bamburi Cement’s presence and signal its revitalized commitment to the County, along with its strategic goals to boost the Gross County Product [GCP].
“To tap into the growing Mombasa economy and infrastructural growth, we have invested in a new concrete and special products plant in the Bamburi ward, Kisauni Sub-County that will be unveiled in due time. We’re also on course to inaugurate the largest solar plant by a private sector company in the region to support our Mombasa Plant’s sustainable power utilisation in Bamburi Ward,” said Mr. Kariuki.
Bamburi Cement’s influence on society in Mombasa has extended across various sectors over the years. Notably, the company has expanded its contributions to cancer care and treatment from initially funding two beds for cancer patients [at the Rahimtullah Ward of Coast General Hospital] to establishing the fully-fledged Bamburi Cement Cancer Center, which offers chemotherapy and other services related to cancer, assisting hundreds of patients on a daily basis. These groundbreaking initiatives led to the creation of the state-of-the-art Radiotherapy Centre at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGT&RH).
