Mavoko Municipality is the home of the Nairobi Grinding Plant at Bamburi Cement ltd in Athi River district.Bamburi started the initiative of restoring water catchment areas with an intention of increasing forest cover in the municipality by working with community and other stakeholders. The banks of river Athi within the municipality and dams under the jurisdiction of Mavoko water services Limited MAWASCO were identified. However, the river banks provided the best opportunity for the pilot phase of this project. For project sustainability, we have negotiated with the farmers who farm on the river banks. MAWASCO are responsible for the river water, forest department and the Administration for the support of the project.

In this project, the company will supply the seedlings, whilst the farmers do the planting and nurture of seedlings. The project was inaugurated by a modest public ceremony on the 14th of November 2009, the District Officer 1 of Athi District, Musalia Edebe was present to officiate this event including other public officials.

The farmers will eventually plant over 100,000 seedlings along an 8km stretch of the river bank. The purpose of this community project is to engage the community and other stakeholders in the area in sustainable tree planting partnership initiatives thereby increasing forest cover the municipality and its environs.
